Nearly every family man dreams about having his own space in his home that he can call his man cave. Having a place to call your own, get away from the noise, and have a little time to yourself can be a great way to relieve stress as well as have some fun. Creating the perfect man cave can be a lofty project, but here are 4 simple steps to get you started in the process:
Find the space
Finding the right space in your home is the first step to creating a perfect man cave. The room you choose should be a place where the lighting can be controlled. This means preferably a room in a basement, or a room where windows are within reach and able to have blinds, shutters, or curtains. If you’re turning your man cave into the ultimate home theater, for example, you’ll want to make sure the room can get dark enough to enjoy the movie experience to the fullest by adding your own lighting to the room.
Determine What the Space is About
Next, you’ll want to determine what you want your room to be focused on. Like we mentioned above, you could turn your man cave into the ultimate home theater. Others may want to create a place to entertain friends and have a bar, pool table, or TV to play video games. Some men may just need a quiet place to work, with a room for a big desk and a few chairs to relax and have some alone time. Determine what the best purpose for the room would be and start making plans for the large items you’ll need to accomplish the goal.
Create a Budget
Creating a great man cave can be a costly endeavor. Depending on what you plan to use your room for there is a large range in what your perfect man cave may cost you. Create a budget and alter what you plan to include in your space accordingly.
4) Add Color and Lighting
After you have found your space, managed your budget, and purchased the key pieces for the room, it’s time to think about lighting and color. You may have some great pieces, but even the best pool table or entertainment center can look cheap next to plain white walls under florescent lighting. In this scenario, it may be a good place to try some dramatic lighting and bold colors. A deep red can be a great color for walls, especially if you’re going to add dramatic lighting in parts of the room. When it comes to color however, make sure you are absolutely sure you are happy with the color you choose before painting an entire wall, especially if you decide to go with something dramatic like red. Repainting over a deep color can be costly and will most certainly be a decent amount of work. Some great options for dramatic lights are gooseneck lighting. A gooseneck light provides a direct beam of light to focus on a particular item or space in the room, instead of a general overhead light that sheds light on the entire room. Lighting should be used to focus on the key parts of your room to draw attention to its important features.
With these 4 simple steps you can create the perfect man cave. Remember not to underestimate the power of the small things like color, lighting, and the finishing touches!
